Messaging protocol

Wormhole

Wormhole is a that lets very different blockchains talk, including Ethereum-style networks, Solana, Sui and Aptos. You usually meet it through its Portal token or through tokens that use its Native Token Transfers.

Official website

How it works

  1. 1A group of 19 computers called Guardians watches the connected networks. When something happens on one network, they sign a message about it. The message counts once 13 of the 19 have signed.
  2. 2Portal Token Bridge locks your tokens on the starting network and gives you a on the other side, an IOU backed by the locked tokens. The old Portal site, legacy.portalbridge.com, closed on June 30, 2026. Use portalbridge.com.
  3. 3Native Token Transfers (NTT) let a token’s creator issue the real token on several networks. Moving it burns it on one side and creates it on the other (), so there is no wrapped token.

Trust model

You are trusting the Guardians. At least 13 of the 19 must stay honest and not get hacked. If 13 were compromised, they could approve fake messages.

Strengths

  • Connects one of the widest sets of networks, including ones that are not Ethereum-style.
  • Other cross-chain services, such as Mayan, are built on top of it.

Limitations

  • Tokens wrapped by Portal are not the official version on the destination network. They can be harder to sell or use there.
  • All the trust sits with one fixed group of Guardians. They also decide which networks stay connected and have dropped some, such as Scroll in April 2026, so check that both of your networks are still supported.
