Stargate

Stargate moves like USDC and USDT, plus ETH, between many Ethereum-style networks. It keeps a pool of real coins on each network. You put coins into the pool on one side and get real coins out of the pool on the other. In 2025 the LayerZero Foundation bought Stargate, and STG can be swapped for ZRO until December 15, 2026.

How it works

  1. 1People called providers put their coins into a Stargate pool on each supported network.
  2. 2You deposit into the pool on your starting network. A LayerZero message tells the pool on the destination network to pay you the same coin, minus fees.
  3. 3Stargate V2 (2024) added Hydra, a mode that reaches networks without a pool by locking coins on one side and issuing a on the other (). Its cheaper Bus mode, which grouped transfers together, ended on October 1, 2026. Now every transfer is sent on its own (Taxi).

Trust model

You are trusting LayerZero to pass the message correctly. In practice that means the group of verifiers (called DVNs) that Stargate has chosen to check each message.

Strengths

  • On pool routes you get the real coin, not a wrapped token.
  • Covers many Ethereum-style networks for stablecoins.

Limitations

  • When a pool runs low, fees can rise and the maximum transfer size can shrink.
  • Hydra routes give you a wrapped token, not the real coin.
  • No pools for Bitcoin or Solana.
