Ethereum to Polygon Bridge
Polygon PoS is a separate network with its own validators that posts checkpoints to Ethereum. Its official bridge, used through the Polygon Portal, is free apart from network fees. Fees on Polygon are paid in POL, not ETH.

Short answer
Polygon PoS is not a rollup like Arbitrum or Base. It is its own chain with its own validators, and it regularly saves summaries of its blocks (checkpoints) on Ethereum. The official PoS bridge is the standard way to move tokens between the two, and the Polygon Portal is its website.
Two things surprise people here. First, fees on Polygon are paid in POL, the coin that replaced MATIC. If you bridge only ETH or USDC, you may arrive with no way to pay for a transaction. Second, ETH does not stay ETH. On Polygon PoS it becomes WETH, a token version of ETH.
Deposits through the Portal usually take about 20 to 30 minutes. Fast bridges like Across and Relay get you there in seconds for a small fee. For USDC, Circle CCTP gives you real USDC on Polygon instead of the older bridged USDC.e.
| Official route | Polygon Portal (PoS bridge) |
|---|---|
| Deposit time | About 20-30 min |
| Withdrawal time | Usually a few hours (checkpoint) |
| Fees on Polygon paid in | POL |
| ETH arrives as | WETH |
| Real USDC | Circle CCTP |
Why this route is difficult
Polygon PoS is a proof-of-stake chain with its own validator set. It is not secured the same way as a rollup. It does save checkpoints on Ethereum, and the PoS bridge uses those checkpoints to decide which withdrawals to release.
Deposits are passed from Ethereum to Polygon by a process called state sync. Polygon validators watch the bridge contracts on Ethereum and create the matching tokens on Polygon. This is why deposits take around 20 to 30 minutes instead of seconds.
Withdrawals work the other way. Tokens are burned on Polygon. Once a checkpoint covering that block is on Ethereum, you call exit on the bridge contract to release your coins. There is no week-long challenge period, but you still need the second transaction.
Fees are paid in POL. POL replaced MATIC as Polygon's coin in 2024. Real USDC is issued on Polygon PoS by Circle, while USDC.e is the older bridged copy. Both look similar in wallets, so check the token contract before you bridge.
Possible approaches
1Official PoS bridge
Deposit through the Polygon PoS bridge contracts using the Polygon Portal.
Trade-offNo bridge fee, but deposits take about half an hour and you rely on Polygon's validators.
2Intent-based bridge
A relayer or solver pays you on Polygon right away and is paid back later.
Trade-offSeconds instead of minutes, for a fee and some risk in the bridge's own contracts.
3Liquidity pool bridge
You add coins to a pool on Ethereum and get the same coin from a pool on Polygon.
Trade-offFast, but fees change with how balanced the pools are.
4Issuer burn-and-mint
Circle CCTP destroys your USDC on Ethereum and creates real USDC on Polygon PoS.
Trade-offReal USDC with no pool limits, but it only works for USDC.
Options compared
| Option | You get | Typical time | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Polygon Portal (deposit) | WETH or official bridged tokens | About 20-30 min | Ethereum fee only | Large deposits, official route |
| Polygon Portal (withdrawal) | ETH or tokens on Ethereum | Usually a few hours | Polygon fee + Ethereum exit fee | No rush, official route |
| Intent-based bridge | ETH, USDC and other common tokens | Seconds to 1 min | Network fee + small bridge fee | Speed, small and medium amounts |
| Liquidity pool bridge | USDC, USDT and others | A few minutes | Network fee + varying pool fee | Stablecoins |
| Circle CCTP | Real USDC | Seconds (fast) or about 13-19 min (standard) | Network fees, plus a small fee in fast mode | USDC without getting USDC.e |
Working solutions
| Solution | You receive | Custody / verification | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polygon Portal (PoS bridge) | WETH or official bridged tokens | Bridge contracts + Polygon validators | Deposits in about 20-30 minutes. Withdrawals wait for a checkpoint. |
| Across | ETH (as WETH), USDC and others | Oracle-checked payback | Usually done in seconds. |
| Relay | ETH (as WETH), USDC and others | Solver pays you | Fast for common coins. |
| Circle CCTP | Real USDC | Circle attestation | For USDC. You do not end up with USDC.e. |
| Stargate | USDC, USDT | LayerZero checkers (DVNs) | Pool-based. |
| Bungee | Depends on the route | Same as the bridge used | An aggregator that compares several bridges. |
How to move Ethereum to Polygon
These steps show an ETH deposit through the Polygon Portal at portal.polygon.technology. The same wallet and network checks apply if you use a fast bridge instead.
- 1
Get your wallet ready
Use MetaMask, Rabby or another EVM wallet with ETH on Ethereum. Your address is the same on Polygon, so you do not need a new wallet. Keep extra ETH for the Ethereum network fee.
- 2
Plan for POL
You need POL to do anything on Polygon. Some fast bridges can add a little POL to your transfer (gas on destination). Otherwise, get a small amount of POL from an exchange that supports withdrawals on Polygon.
- 3
Open the Portal and pick the networks
Open the Polygon Portal from a trusted link, connect your wallet, and choose Ethereum as the source and Polygon PoS as the destination.
- 4
Choose the token and amount
ETH needs no extra step. Other tokens need a token approval first. For USDC, a CCTP route gives you real USDC. Through the plain PoS bridge you get the bridged copy USDC.e.
- 5
Confirm and track
Sign the deposit on Ethereum. After about 20 to 30 minutes, the funds show on Polygonscan under the same address. ETH shows up as WETH.
Fees and timing
The main cost of a deposit is the transaction on Ethereum. The Portal adds no fee of its own. Tokens cost more to deposit than ETH, and they need an approval first. Once you are on Polygon, transactions are usually very cheap, paid in POL.
Fast bridges charge a fee on top of network fees and show it as the amount you will receive. For ETH and USDC, several bridges compete on this route. Aggregators like Bungee or LI.FI compare them at once.
Withdrawals are cheaper in time than on optimistic rollups, but not instant. You burn the tokens on Polygon, wait until a checkpoint covering that block reaches Ethereum, then send an exit transaction on Ethereum. Checkpoints are sent about every 30 minutes, so the whole process usually takes a few hours at most.
Common mistakes
- Arriving on Polygon with no POL, so you cannot pay for any transaction.
- Expecting ETH on Polygon and being confused by WETH in your wallet.
- Sending USDC through the PoS bridge and getting USDC.e when an app expects real USDC.
- Following old guides that still call the fee coin MATIC.
- Forgetting the exit transaction on Ethereum after a Portal withdrawal.
- Choosing a different Polygon network than Polygon PoS by mistake.
Before you transfer
- Get a little POL for fees before or during the transfer.
- ETH on Polygon PoS is WETH. That is normal.
- Polygon has real USDC and bridged USDC.e. Prefer routes that give you real USDC.
- Polygon PoS has its own validators. It is not secured the same way as a rollup.
- Your Ethereum address is also your Polygon address. No new wallet needed.
- Many exchanges support Polygon directly, which can be simpler than bridging.
Frequently asked questions
About 20 to 30 minutes through the Polygon Portal. Fast bridges such as Across and Relay usually take seconds to a minute.
POL is the coin used to pay fees on Polygon PoS. Without it you cannot send tokens or use apps there, even if you hold ETH or USDC.
POL replaced MATIC as the coin of Polygon PoS in 2024. Older guides and some apps still mention MATIC.
ETH is not the native coin of Polygon PoS, so the bridge gives you WETH, a token that represents ETH. You can bridge it back to Ethereum as ETH.
Through the Portal, you wait for a checkpoint on Ethereum and then send an exit transaction. Checkpoints come about every 30 minutes, so it usually takes a few hours at most. Fast bridges take seconds.
USDC on Polygon PoS is issued by Circle. USDC.e is USDC that was bridged from Ethereum through the PoS bridge. If you want real USDC, use a route based on CCTP.
