Ethereum to Bitcoin Bridge

Getting real BTC from Ethereum is a well supported route. You can swap ETH, USDC or wrapped BTC for native BTC in one step, or redeem a wrapped BTC token through whoever issued it. Who can redeem depends on the token.

Short answer

Nothing on Ethereum can travel to Bitcoin by itself. To end up with real BTC in a Bitcoin wallet, someone on the Bitcoin side has to send it to you. That is either a swap service paying out of its own BTC, or the that holds the coins behind a .

If you hold ETH or USDC, a direct swap is the simple choice. THORChain, Chainflip, Garden and NEAR Intents all take tokens from your Ethereum wallet and send BTC to your Bitcoin address. No account is needed. BTC and ETH were THORChain's largest route in the first quarter of 2026, so this pair usually gets good prices.

If you hold WBTC, cbBTC or tBTC, check who can redeem it before you decide. Only approved institutions can redeem WBTC directly, so most people swap it or sell it. cbBTC turns back into BTC when you send it to a Coinbase account. tBTC can be redeemed by anyone through the Threshold app, for a small fee.

Why this route is difficult

Bitcoin cannot read Ethereum, and Ethereum cannot move coins on Bitcoin. So the BTC you receive always comes from someone who already holds BTC on Bitcoin. That can be a vault run by , a in an , a company, or a group of signers.

Direct swaps pay you from their own BTC. THORChain and Chainflip keep BTC in vaults that their validators control together. Garden uses a time-locked contract on each side, so you and a solver either both get paid or both get your coins back. NEAR Intents uses solvers and settles on NEAR. In each case your ETH or tokens stay with the service, and the BTC you get is a real coin.

Wrapped BTC works the other way round. The BTC is already sitting with a custodian, and you need that custodian to release it. That is why redemption rules matter. WBTC limits redemption to approved institutions. Coinbase unwraps cbBTC only inside a Coinbase account, and cbBTC transfers are not available in some regions, such as Canada and Japan. tBTC lets any holder ask the Threshold signers to send BTC to a Bitcoin address.

If you cannot redeem a wrapped token yourself, you can still swap it. THORChain has a WBTC pool on Ethereum, and Garden supports WBTC and cbBTC. Those swaps price the token against BTC, so you get close to the full value, not an exact 1:1.

Possible approaches

1Native cross-chain swap

You sell ETH, USDC or WBTC on Ethereum and receive on Bitcoin from a validator-run vault (THORChain, Chainflip).

Trade-offNo account and real BTC at the end, but you trust the vault during the swap and pay pool fees.

2Atomic swap

You lock your Ethereum tokens in a time-locked contract and a solver locks BTC on Bitcoin. Both sides complete, or both get refunded after a set time (Garden).

Trade-offNo shared vault, but only for the pairs and sizes solvers will take.

3Intent-based swap

You state what you want, a solver pays you BTC, and the deal settles on NEAR (NEAR ).

Trade-offSimple quotes, but you rely on the service and its contracts. It paused for about half a day after an exploit in October 2026.

4Issuer redemption

You hand wrapped BTC back to the issuer and get native BTC (cbBTC through Coinbase, tBTC through Threshold, WBTC through approved merchants).

Trade-offClose to 1:1, but the rules depend on the issuer and some need an account or approval.

How to move Ethereum to Bitcoin

These steps show a direct ETH to BTC swap through a THORChain or Chainflip app. The same flow works for USDC. If you hold WBTC, cbBTC or tBTC, read the redemption notes below first, since a swap may not be your best option.

  1. 1

Get a Bitcoin address you control

Open a Bitcoin wallet such as Sparrow, Electrum, a hardware wallet app or a multi-chain wallet with Bitcoin support. Bitcoin addresses start with bc1, 1 or 3. Never paste a 0x address into the Bitcoin field. Avoid using an exchange deposit address unless you know the exchange credits incoming payouts from swap services.

  2. 2

    Keep ETH for gas

Sending anything from Ethereum costs , paid in ETH. If you are selling USDC or WBTC, keep some ETH in the same wallet. Some apps also ask you to approve the token first, which is a separate transaction with its own fee.

  3. 3

    Get a quote

Choose ETH (or USDC) on Ethereum as what you send and BTC on Bitcoin as what you get. Paste your Bitcoin address. Compare the amount you will receive, not just the fee. Check the limit, which is how far the price can move before the swap is refunded.

  4. 4

Let the app build the transaction

THORChain needs swap instructions (a ) attached to your deposit. Chainflip gives you a deposit address made for this one swap. Let the app prepare it and confirm it in your wallet. Do not send ETH from an exchange to a THORChain address, because the exchange cannot attach the instructions.

  5. 5

    Wait for the BTC payout

Ethereum confirms your deposit within minutes. The service then sends BTC on Bitcoin. You can often see the payout in mempool.space before it confirms. A new Bitcoin block comes about every 10 minutes on average, but the gaps vary. THORChain may hold back large payouts on purpose for a while.

  6. 6

    Track and check

Follow a THORChain swap on Runescan or THORChain Tracker using your Ethereum transaction hash. Follow a Chainflip swap on Chainflip Scan. Once the BTC transaction confirms, your Bitcoin wallet shows the balance. If the price moved past your limit, the service refunds you on Ethereum, minus fees.

Fees and timing

You pay the Ethereum gas for your deposit, plus an approval transaction if the app needs one for a token. Gas is often small in 2026, but it rises when Ethereum is busy. On small swaps it can still be a noticeable share.

The swap itself has a service fee, any extra fee the app adds, and . THORChain also charges an outbound fee that covers the Bitcoin transaction it sends you. Other services build the Bitcoin payout cost into the quote. On large amounts, slippage (a worse price because the trade is big) matters most, so compare quotes or use a THORChain streaming swap.

Redeeming wrapped BTC has its own costs. tBTC charges a 0.2% redemption fee, which Threshold says T stakers can reduce or waive. cbBTC sent to Coinbase is credited as BTC in your account, but moving that BTC to your own wallet is a normal Coinbase withdrawal with its own fee. WBTC holders without merchant status usually pay a swap fee or exchange fee instead.

Common mistakes

  • Entering an Ethereum 0x address where the Bitcoin address should go. Payouts sent to a wrong address cannot be pulled back.
  • Running out of ETH for gas. Holders of USDC or WBTC often forget that every Ethereum transaction needs ETH.
  • Expecting to redeem WBTC directly. Only approved institutions can mint and burn it. Regular holders swap it or sell it.
  • Sending cbBTC to Coinbase on a network the account page did not show. Open the BTC receive screen and select the Ethereum network to get the right address.
  • Buying a token that only looks like WBTC or cbBTC. Check the contract address on Etherscan or the issuer's site before swapping.
  • Assuming every service supports every Bitcoin address type. Use the address format your wallet gives you and let the app check it.

Before you transfer

  • Start with what you hold. ETH and USDC suit a direct swap. For wrapped BTC, check first whether you can redeem it yourself.
  • Keep enough ETH in the wallet for gas, and for a if the app asks for one.
  • Double-check the Bitcoin address. Bitcoin payouts cannot be reversed.
  • For large amounts, compare THORChain, Chainflip, Garden and NEAR Intents, and consider splitting the swap.
  • Check service status before sending. Swap services sometimes pause after incidents.
  • If you plan to keep BTC long term, send it to a wallet where you hold the keys, not an exchange.

Frequently asked questions

Use a direct swap service such as THORChain, Chainflip, Garden or NEAR Intents. You send ETH from your own wallet and receive native BTC at your Bitcoin address. No account is needed.

Not one that works without trust. Bitcoin cannot verify Ethereum, so you either swap with a service that holds BTC, or redeem a wrapped BTC token with its issuer.

Most people swap it. THORChain and Garden both take WBTC on Ethereum and pay native BTC. You can also sell it on an exchange that supports WBTC. Direct redemption is only open to approved institutions.

Yes, if you have a Coinbase account. Send cbBTC to your Coinbase BTC address on the Ethereum network and it is credited as BTC. cbBTC transfers are not offered in some regions, such as Canada and Japan.

Yes. Threshold lets any holder redeem tBTC to a Bitcoin address through its app, with no account. The redemption fee is 0.2%, and Threshold says T stakers can reduce or waive it.

It depends on pool depth and the size of your trade. Wrapped BTC moves with the BTC price, so the swap mostly costs fees. ETH to BTC also includes the ETH and BTC price ratio. Compare live quotes for your amount.

Usually because the price moved past your slippage limit before the swap ran. THORChain and Chainflip then refund you on Ethereum, minus fees. Get a fresh quote and try again.
