Short answer
Linea is a layer 2 network built by Consensys, the company behind MetaMask. It is a zk rollup: it bundles transactions and posts a proof to Ethereum that they were run correctly. It uses the same 0x addresses as Ethereum and pays fees in ETH.
The official way in is the Linea bridge app on linea.build. It has two main tabs. "Native Bridge" uses Linea's canonical token bridge. "All Bridges" is an aggregator powered by LI.FI that picks a route through other bridges. According to the Linea docs, native deposits take about 20 minutes.
Fast bridges like Across deliver in seconds or minutes for a small fee. The difference matters more on the way back. Native withdrawals from Linea take about 2 to 12 hours and you have to claim them on Ethereum yourself. That is much faster than the week on optimistic rollups, but not instant.
| Network type | zk rollup (Consensys) |
|---|---|
| Official route | Linea bridge app (Native Bridge tab) |
| Deposit time | About 20 min |
| Withdrawal time | About 2-12 hours + claim |
| Fees on Linea paid in | ETH |
| Real USDC | Circle CCTP |
Why this route is difficult
Linea is a zk rollup. A prover creates a cryptographic proof that a batch of Linea transactions was run correctly, and a contract on Ethereum checks it. Once Ethereum accepts the proof, the result is final. There is no 7-day challenge window as on Arbitrum or OP Mainnet.
Deposits travel through Linea's message service. Your deposit is recorded on Ethereum, passed to Linea, and then claimed there, either automatically by the postman or manually by you. That is why it takes about 20 minutes rather than seconds.
Withdrawals wait until the batch with your transaction has been proven on Ethereum. The Linea docs give about 2 to 12 hours, and you must claim manually on Ethereum. Unclaimed transfers older than 90 days drop out of the bridge app and must be claimed another way, as described in the Linea docs. In the past, Linea withdrawals have at times been delayed far beyond normal.
USDC works differently. Linea upgraded its bridged USDC to native USDC issued by Circle, so the native bridge sends USDC through Circle CCTP instead of the token bridge. CCTP transfers always need a manual claim.
Possible approaches
1Native rollup bridge
Deposit through Linea's canonical token bridge using the Native Bridge tab of the Linea app.
Trade-offThe most direct option, but deposits take about 20 minutes and withdrawals hours plus a claim.
2Intent-based bridge
A relayer or solver pays you on Linea right away and is paid back later.
Trade-offSeconds instead of minutes or hours, for a fee and some risk in the bridge's own contracts.
3Aggregator
A service like LI.FI compares bridges and DEXs and picks a route for you.
Trade-offConvenient and often fast, but the safety depends on the route it picks.
4Issuer burn-and-mint
Circle CCTP destroys your USDC on Ethereum and creates native USDC on Linea.
Trade-offNative USDC with no pool limits, but it only works for USDC and needs a claim.
Options compared
| Option | You get | Typical time | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native bridge (deposit) | ETH or listed bridged tokens | About 20 min | Ethereum fee only | Large deposits, official route |
| Native bridge (withdrawal) | ETH or tokens on Ethereum | About 2-12 hours | Linea fee + Ethereum claim fee | No rush, official route |
| Intent-based bridge | ETH, USDC and other common tokens | Seconds to a few min | Network fee + small bridge fee | Speed, and most withdrawals |
| Circle CCTP | Real USDC | About 20 sec (fast) or 13-19 min (standard) | Network fees, plus a small fee in fast mode | Moving USDC |
Working solutions
| Solution | You receive | Custody / verification | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linea native bridge | ETH or listed bridged tokens | Ethereum (bridge contracts) | Deposits in about 20 minutes. Withdrawals take about 2-12 hours plus a claim. |
| Across | ETH, USDC and others | Oracle-checked payback | Usually done in seconds. |
| Circle CCTP | Native USDC | Circle attestation | Built into the Linea native bridge. Fast or standard mode, manual claim. |
| LI.FI | Depends on the route | Same as the bridge used | Powers the "All Bridges" tab in the Linea app. |
| Symbiosis | ETH and common tokens | Same as the route used | Compares several bridges and DEXs. |
How to move Ethereum to Linea
These steps show an ETH deposit through the Native Bridge tab of the Linea bridge app. The same wallet and network checks apply if you use the "All Bridges" tab or another fast bridge.
- 1
Get your wallet ready
Use MetaMask, Rabby or another EVM wallet with ETH on Ethereum. Your address is the same on Linea, so you do not need a new wallet. Keep extra ETH for the Ethereum network fee.
- 2
Open the bridge from a trusted link
Go to the bridge on linea.build from the official Linea site, not from an ad. Select the "Native Bridge" tab and set the direction from Ethereum (L1) to Linea (L2).
- 3
Choose the token and amount
ETH needs no extra step. Other tokens must be on Linea's token list and need a token approval first. USDC goes through Circle CCTP inside the same app and needs a manual claim on Linea.
- 4
Confirm the deposit
Check the fee estimate and sign. For ETH and listed tokens, automatic claiming is on by default, so a service called the postman delivers the funds on Linea for you.
- 5
Track it in the history
The transfer shows in the bridge history right away. After about 20 minutes, the funds appear on the Linea explorer under the same address.
Fees and timing
The main cost of a deposit is the transaction on Ethereum. According to the Linea docs, the postman fee for automatic claiming on deposits from Ethereum to Linea is now free. Tokens cost more to deposit than ETH, and they need an approval first.
Fast bridges charge a fee on top of network fees and show it as the amount you will receive. The "All Bridges" tab in the Linea app compares routes through LI.FI. The Linea docs say it is often faster than the native bridge but costs slightly more.
Plan the way back before you go. A native withdrawal takes about 2 to 12 hours and needs a manual claim on Ethereum, which costs a normal Ethereum fee. Many people use a fast bridge for that direction.
Common mistakes
- Buying the LINEA token to pay fees. Fees on Linea are paid in ETH.
- Forgetting the manual claim on Ethereum after a native withdrawal.
- Forgetting the manual claim on Linea after a USDC transfer.
- Picking Linea Sepolia, the test network, instead of Linea mainnet.
- Bridging a token that is not on Linea's token list through an unofficial route and getting an unknown copy.
- Using a fake bridge site found through an ad.
Before you transfer
- Fees on Linea are paid in ETH. The LINEA token does not cover fees.
- Withdrawals through the native bridge take hours, not a week, but need a manual claim.
- USDC on Linea is native USDC from Circle and moves through CCTP.
- Your Ethereum address is also your Linea address. No new wallet needed.
- The "All Bridges" tab is the easiest choice for most people, according to the Linea docs.
- Open bridge sites from official links only, and check the address bar before you sign.
Frequently asked questions
About 20 minutes through the Linea native bridge for ETH and other tokens. USDC through CCTP takes about 13 to 19 minutes in standard mode or about 20 seconds in fast mode. Fast bridges like Across usually take seconds.
About 2 to 12 hours through the native bridge, according to the Linea docs, followed by a manual claim on Ethereum. Fast bridges pay you on Ethereum in seconds or minutes.
No. Fees on Linea are paid in ETH. Holding LINEA does not cover network fees.
Some transfers need a second transaction on the receiving network to release the funds. On Linea this is needed for every withdrawal to Ethereum and for every USDC transfer. Deposits of ETH and listed tokens are claimed for you automatically.
Yes. Linea has native USDC, and its native bridge moves USDC through CCTP in standard or fast mode.
Yes. Linea posts cryptographic proofs to Ethereum. That is why withdrawals take hours instead of the 7 days common on optimistic rollups.
