Messaging protocol
LayerZero
LayerZero is a messaging protocol that lets apps send messages and tokens between many networks. You do not use it directly. You meet it through apps and tokens built on it, such as Stargate and USDT0. Since 2025 Stargate has belonged to the LayerZero Foundation.
Official websiteHow it works
- 1An app on the starting network sends a message through LayerZero’s main contract, called the Endpoint.
- 2Verifiers chosen by that app, called DVNs, check the message.
- 3A delivery service called the Executor brings the message to the destination network. Tokens that follow LayerZero’s OFT standard are burned or locked on the starting side and created or released on the other side.
Trust model
It depends on the app. Each app picks which verifiers (DVNs) must approve its messages, and its security is only as strong as that choice.
Strengths
- Each app can choose its own way of checking messages.
- Many tokens are issued as OFTs and move across many networks this way.
Limitations
- Not a bridge you use yourself. You always go through an app built on it.
- Safety is not the same everywhere. It depends on how each app has set things up. Apps still on the older LayerZero V1 should check their setup, because LayerZero Labs stops running its V1 Relayer on December 15, 2026.
