Zcash to Ethereum Bridge
There is no direct, trust-minimized Zcash to Ethereum bridge today, and no wrapped ZEC on Ethereum with real trading. To move ZEC value to Ethereum you swap it for ETH or a stablecoin, most easily with NEAR Intents (also inside Zashi) or on an exchange.

Short answer
Short answer: there is no working Zcash to Ethereum bridge that lets you hold ZEC on Ethereum without trusting a custodian. Older wrapped ZEC tokens, like renZEC and wZEC, have died out or barely trade. So a ZEC to ETH bridge today really means a swap. You give up ZEC and receive ETH, USDC or USDT on Ethereum.
The easiest swap is NEAR Intents. You send ZEC to a one-time deposit address, a solver pays you on Ethereum, and NEAR settles the deal in between. Zashi has this built in and can pay from your shielded balance. Swap apps built on NEAR Intents, aggregators and centralized exchanges that list ZEC do the same job.
Privacy does not carry over. The Zcash deposit address is public, and everything on Ethereum is public. Bridges are being built, most visibly red·bridge, which connects Zcash to Avalanche and was preparing to launch in late 2026. None of them gives you trust-minimized ZEC on Ethereum yet, so check the outlook below before trusting a new "wrapped ZEC" token.
| Direct bridge | Not yet |
|---|---|
| Usual way | Swap ZEC for ETH or stablecoins |
| Usual time | 10-40 min |
| Wrapped ZEC on Ethereum | No active, liquid version |
| Zcash block time | About 75 seconds |
| Private on arrival | No, Ethereum is public |
| Need ETH on arrival | Yes, for USDC or USDT |
Why there is no direct bridge yet
Zcash has no smart contracts. It cannot lock ZEC under rules that depend on what happens on Ethereum, and Ethereum cannot cheaply check Zcash blocks. So any ZEC token on Ethereum has needed someone, a company or a group of signers, to hold the real ZEC.
Privacy makes it harder still. Shielded Zcash hides sender, receiver and amount. A bridge has to prove that a deposit happened, and it cannot see shielded deposits without view keys. Working around that while keeping user privacy is an open design problem.
Past wrapped versions failed for practical reasons. renZEC depended on RenVM, which shut down its first network after its owner Alameda Research collapsed in 2022. wZEC, launched in 2020 with a custodian, never got much trading. A wrapped token with no market is not useful, even if it is well backed.
That is why swaps fill the gap today. Intent-based swaps and exchanges give you real ETH or stablecoins on Ethereum without anyone needing to issue ZEC there. The cost is that you no longer hold ZEC, and the swap is visible.
Past attempts
| Project | When | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| wZEC (custodial wrapped ZEC) | 2020 | Launched on Ethereum with a regulated custodian holding the ZEC. Trading stayed very thin and it never became a common way to use ZEC in DeFi. |
| renZEC (RenVM) | 2020-2022 | Minted ZEC on Ethereum through RenVM's network of nodes. Ended when Ren shut down its first network after the Alameda Research collapse in late 2022. |
| Trustless bridge proposals | 2021-2026 | Several community proposals for trustless or one-way ZEC bridges to Ethereum were discussed on the Zcash forum. None reached a working mainnet bridge to Ethereum. |
What is being built
red·bridge
Launch prepZcash to Avalanche bridge, formerly the Zcash Elastic Subnet project, funded by Zcash Community Grants and the Avalanche Foundation. ZEC is held by guardians using FROST threshold signatures and wrapped as ZEC.rbr. The team pointed to a Q4 2026 launch. Reaching Ethereum would need a second hop.
NEAR Intents for ZEC
MainnetNot a bridge, but the main live path. Solvers swap ZEC for ETH and stablecoins on Ethereum, and Zashi uses it for in-wallet swaps.
Zcash Shielded Assets (ZSA)
In developmentA planned upgrade that would let other assets live inside Zcash's shielded pool. It could make two-way bridges more useful, but its activation date is not set.
Trustless bridging research
ResearchCommunity proposals in 2026 explore bridges that rely on proofs instead of custodians. These are early designs.
What still stands in the way
- Zcash has no smart contracts, so it cannot lock ZEC under rules tied to Ethereum.
- Ethereum cannot cheaply verify Zcash's proof-of-work blocks.
- Shielded deposits are invisible to outside systems unless users share view keys, which weakens privacy.
- Past wrapped ZEC tokens never built real trading, so new ones start with little trust.
- Some exchanges and regulators treat privacy coins with caution, which limits liquidity and support.
Signs the bridge is close
- Whether red·bridge launches on mainnet and passes independent security reviews.
- Any bridge or wrapped ZEC from red·bridge or others reaching Ethereum with redeemable backing and real Uniswap liquidity.
- Progress on Zcash Shielded Assets and its activation in a network upgrade.
- Swap volume and solver depth for ZEC on NEAR Intents, which decide how good large quotes are.
Possible approaches
1Swap ZEC for Ethereum assets
Solvers or exchanges take ZEC and pay out ETH or stablecoins on Ethereum.
Trade-offWorks today with real assets on both sides. You give up ZEC, and the swap is public.
2Threshold-signer bridge
A group of guardians holds ZEC with a shared key (FROST threshold signatures) and mints a token on another chain. This is the red·bridge model.
Trade-offNo single custodian, but you still trust that enough guardians stay honest. Not live to Ethereum.
3Custodial wrapped ZEC
One company holds ZEC and issues a matching token on Ethereum.
Trade-offSimple to build, but it relies on the custodian, and past attempts never found buyers.
Options compared
| Option | You get | Typical time | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intent-based swap (NEAR Intents) | ETH, USDC or USDT | 10-30 min | Solver markup + small Zcash fee | Most people, incl. Zashi users |
| Aggregator or swap app | Supported Ethereum tokens | 10-40 min | Route fees, maybe an extra fee | Comparing ZEC quotes |
| Centralized exchange | ETH or stablecoins | 30 min to a few hours | Trading + withdrawal fee | Large amounts, if ZEC is listed |
| Via another chain (e.g. Avalanche) | Wrapped ZEC elsewhere, then a second hop | Depends on both bridges | Two sets of fees | Only if you need ZEC exposure in DeFi |
Working solutions
| Solution | You receive | Custody / verification | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| NEAR Intents | ETH, USDC, USDT | Solvers, settled on NEAR | Deposit goes to a public ZEC address. Can be funded from shielded. |
| Zashi wallet swaps | ETH, USDC, USDT | Solvers, settled on NEAR | Built-in swap from shielded balance. Refunds go to a public address. |
| Rango Exchange | Supported Ethereum tokens | Depends on route | Compares ZEC routes. Check who fills the quote. |
| Centralized exchanges | ETH or stablecoins | Exchange holds funds | Listings vary by country. Check if shielded deposits are credited. |
How to get from Zcash to Ethereum today
These steps show a NEAR Intents swap from ZEC to ETH or USDC, inside Zashi or in a NEAR Intents app. It is the most direct way available today and works from shielded or public balances, depending on your wallet.
- 1
Get your Ethereum address
Copy your address from MetaMask, Rabby or a hardware wallet. It starts with 0x and has 42 characters. If you will receive USDC or USDT, you also need a little ETH later to move them, so choosing ETH can be easier.
- 2
Check what your ZEC wallet can send
Zashi spends from its shielded balance and has the swap built in. YWallet and Zingo can send from shielded funds to a public address, which is what the deposit address is. If your ZEC sits on a public address (starting with t1), most wallets can send it directly.
- 3
Get a quote and a deposit address
Choose ZEC as what you send and ETH, USDC or USDT on Ethereum as what you get. Paste your 0x address and check the quote and the minimum amount. The service creates a one-time public Zcash deposit address for this swap.
- 4
Set or check the refund address
If the swap fails or the quote expires, your ZEC goes back to a refund address. Zashi uses a public address from your wallet. A refund to a public address can be seen by anyone, so consider moving it back to your shielded balance.
- 5
Send ZEC and follow it
Send the exact amount before the quote expires. A Zcash block comes about every 75 seconds, and the swap starts after a few confirmations. You can watch the deposit address on a Zcash explorer like Blockchair or 3xpl.
- 6
Check it arrived on Ethereum
Once the solver pays, the funds reach Ethereum within a minute or so. Look up your address on Etherscan. For USDC or USDT, check that the token contract is the official one.
Fees and timing
Zcash network fees are small and predictable, since current wallets set them by fixed rules. The main cost is the solver markup built into the quote, plus any fee the app adds. Fewer solvers trade ZEC than BTC or ETH, so the quote gets worse as the amount grows. Check the quote at a few sizes before a large swap.
On Ethereum, receiving ETH needs nothing extra. If you receive USDC or USDT, you need ETH to move them later. Ethereum gas in 2026 is often cents to a dollar or two, but it rises when the network is busy. Exchanges charge trading and withdrawal fees instead, which hit small amounts hardest.
Time depends mostly on Zcash confirmations. Most NEAR Intents swaps finish in 10 to 30 minutes. Exchanges often want more confirmations and may review withdrawals by hand, so they can take an hour or more.
Common mistakes
- Buying a token called "ZEC" or "wZEC" on Uniswap and expecting it to track ZEC. Old wrapped versions are dead or barely traded, and lookalike tokens exist.
- Thinking a shielded send keeps the swap private. The deposit amount is visible, and the Ethereum side is fully public.
- Sending shielded ZEC to an exchange that only credits deposits from public addresses. Read the deposit instructions first.
- Receiving USDC or USDT on Ethereum with no ETH. You cannot move it until you add ETH for gas.
- Letting the quote expire before your ZEC is sent, which usually leads to a refund instead of a swap.
Before you transfer
- Ask yourself if you need ZEC on Ethereum, or just its value. If it is the value, a swap is simpler and safer than any wrapped token.
- Sending from a shielded balance keeps your past history private, but the swap amount is public.
- Treat any new "wrapped ZEC" on Ethereum with care. Check who holds the ZEC, how to redeem it, and how much trades.
- Not much ZEC trades on swap services, so compare quotes on large amounts.
- Keep a little ETH in the receiving wallet if you choose USDC or USDT.
- Rules for privacy coins and exchange listings differ by country.
Frequently asked questions
Not a direct, trust-minimized one. Today you swap ZEC for ETH or stablecoins with NEAR Intents, an aggregator or an exchange. Bridges to other chains, like red·bridge to Avalanche, are being built.
Use a NEAR Intents swap, in Zashi or a NEAR Intents app, and enter your Ethereum address as where to send. A centralized exchange that lists ZEC is the other option.
Not in a usable form. renZEC ended with RenVM in 2022, and wZEC from 2020 never had real trading. Be careful with any token claiming to be ZEC on Ethereum.
renZEC was issued by RenVM, which was owned by Alameda Research. After Alameda and FTX collapsed in November 2022, the Ren team shut down the first RenVM network and asked users to redeem their tokens.
A Zcash bridge funded by Zcash Community Grants and the Avalanche Foundation. It connects Zcash to Avalanche, with ZEC held by a group of guardians using threshold signatures. It was preparing to launch in late 2026. It does not go directly to Ethereum.
Only partly. A shielded send hides where the ZEC came from, but the public deposit and the Ethereum payout can both be seen.
Usually 10 to 30 minutes with NEAR Intents, since the swap waits for a few Zcash confirmations. Exchanges can take longer.
