Canonical bridge
StarkGate
StarkGate is the official bridge between Ethereum and Starknet, built by StarkWare. It moves ETH and ERC-20 tokens; Starknet is a ZK rollup, so withdrawals finish once a validity proof reaches Ethereum.
Official websiteHow it works
- 1You connect an Ethereum wallet and a Starknet wallet (such as Argent or Braavos) on the StarkGate site and choose the token.
- 2For deposits, the Ethereum contract locks the tokens and sends a message to Starknet, where the same amount is credited to your Starknet address.
- 3For withdrawals, the tokens are burned on Starknet. Once the batch containing your withdrawal is proven on Ethereum, you complete the withdrawal on Ethereum.
Trust model
Funds are released on Ethereum only after a STARK validity proof of Starknet's state is verified there, so no group of signers holds them. You rely on Starknet's proof system and on StarkWare and the Starknet governance, which can upgrade the contracts.
Strengths
- Official route secured by validity proofs.
- If a deposit never arrives, you can cancel it yourself and reclaim the funds after about five days.
- Withdrawal limits on some tokens slow down large outflows in an emergency.
Limitations
- Withdrawals take hours and the final step costs Ethereum gas.
- Needs a separate Starknet wallet: Starknet addresses differ from Ethereum ones.
- Connects only Ethereum and Starknet.
