Canonical bridge
sBTC
sBTC is the official way to move Bitcoin to Stacks and back. Each sBTC is backed 1:1 by real BTC held in a wallet controlled by a group of signers.
Official websiteHow it works
- 1You send BTC to a deposit address on Bitcoin, usually through the sBTC app or the Leather or Xverse wallet.
- 2After the Bitcoin transaction confirms, the signers move the BTC into their shared wallet and mint the same amount of sBTC to your Stacks address.
- 3To go back, you lock sBTC in a Stacks contract and name a Bitcoin address. After 6 Bitcoin blocks, the signers approve the request, send you BTC and burn the sBTC.
Trust model
You trust the sBTC signer set. At least 70% of the signers must approve every deposit and withdrawal, so no single company holds the keys. The signers are known infrastructure firms, and the set changes over time through planned rotations.
Strengths
- The official bridge built by the Stacks ecosystem, not a third-party wrapper.
- Backed 1:1 by BTC that anyone can check on Bitcoin.
- Works directly inside popular Bitcoin wallets such as Leather and Xverse.
Limitations
- Only Bitcoin and Stacks. To reach other networks you need another bridge.
- Slow by design: a deposit takes several Bitcoin blocks, a withdrawal at least 6.
- You need a little STX to pay fees on Stacks.
